Lyrics

Bring Me Down by Shay Carlucci

I will sit and wait for the destruction of your world.
My molding like yours and my hatred is mine.
You may recognize me standing high upon the hill.
Sowing together sorrows for your weak and broken ill.
Chosen yet abandoned still. Unsatisfied till the last kill.

Who will bring me down?
No man and his sword. No king and his crown.
Who will bring me down?
I fly to the stars and set nests above the clouds.

I will sit and wait for the destruction of your world.
Your molding like mine and your hatred like his.
You may recognize me the first and the last.
The alpha and omega. Your future and past.

I will bring you down.
With my word and sword as your King wearing His crown.
I will bring you down.
I created the stars and you out of the ground.

You fly above gods. I will break your wings. I am I am.
You fly above gods. I will break your wings. I am I am.

to be the end of Israel and Edom had witnessed it
all (1). Although the nations of Israel and Edom were (2) neighbors who shared a family heritage , they did not come to the rescue for Israel. They did not provide shelter to the survivors of war. They did not have compassion on the defeated nation. Edom was proud, and they acted on the day of Israel’s greatest need in consistency with their pride.

It is to this proud people that Obadiah speaks. Edom will be held responsible for their behavior. Pride has consequences, and nothing that they were proud of could keep those consequences from happening. Yes, Edom was proud of their secure city (3) nestled in the rocks, but it would not save them. Edom was proud of their strategic alliances (4), but they would crumble. Edom was proud of their world-renowned wise men (5), but they would fail. Edom was proud of their armies, but they would be slaughtered (6). Edom’s pride had led them to trust in themselves but their pride, as is all pride, was deceitful (7). Their trust was misplaced.

Pride is never harmless. It is never isolated to how you view yourself. It is always comparative and changes the way you treat others. Love says do unto others as you would have done unto you but pride says, they don’t deserve that.

For Edom, the root of pride bore many terrible fruits during the siege of Jerusalem: indifference (8), gloating (9), boasting (10), looting (11), even blocking their escape and handing them over to their enemies (12). They could not believe themselves superior to Israel, without treating them as inferior. Their pride had caused them to sin against others, as if they could escape God’s justice, but God would repay them (13).

Obadiah points forward to the Day of the Lord, when God will judge all the nations and perfect justice will at last be done. To Israel, scattered and divested of the land and witnesses to the evils of Edom, which they seemingly got away with, the Day of the Lord is a day of hope (14). For us today, the idea that true justice will take place should put us at peace. People often get away with horrible crimes in our lives; abuses remain hidden, corruption interferes with judicial proceedings, criminals walk away unscathed but God sees and one day, on that Day, justice will be done.

It may look now like the end for Israel, but God will fulfill his promises. They shall return to the land and flourish in it (15). Whereas Edom trusted in themselves and therefore has no future, those who have trusted in the Lord will not be disappointed. In the words of Jesus, “ Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth”. It is not the proud who get everything, but the meek because the Kingdom shall be the Lord’s 16, and he will give it to his people.
